A power kept secret for 2000 years. A woman who stands to lose everything. ** From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author J.F.Penn ** India. When a nun is burned alive on the sacred ghats of Varanasi, and the stone she carried is stolen, an international hunt is triggered for the relics of the early church. Forged in the fire and blood of martyrs, the Pentecost stones have been handed down through generations of Keepers who kept their power and locations secret. Until now. The Keepers are being murdered, the stones stolen by those who would use them for evil in a world transformed by religious fundamentalism. Oxford University psychologist Morgan Sierra is forced into the search when her sister and niece are held hostage. She is helped by Jake Timber from the mysterious ARKANE, a British government agency specializing in paranormal and religious experience. Morgan must risk her own life to save her family, but will she ultimately be betrayed? From ancient Christian sites in Spain, Italy and Israel to the far reaches of Iran and Tunisia, Morgan and Jake must track down the stones through the myths of the early church in a race against time before a new Pentecost is summoned, this time powered by the fires of evil. The first in the ARKANE series, STONE OF FIRE is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller that explores the edges of faith against a backdrop of early Christian history, archaeology and psychology.

He couldn’t bear to be touched by a barber, so he roughly chopped it himself with scissors now and then, when hunks of it began falling down over his eyes. His glasses had thin wire rims, the lightest he could stand to have on his skin. “Jake, welcome back. What do you need?” he said briskly.  There was no small talk with Martin: he moved in a linear fashion across the face of the world, he needed a problem to solve and didn’t waste time.  Jake liked him and felt a kinship with his loner

and business-like. “Yes, sir. Morgan found it but we were tracked and a team from Thanatos were there to intercept. They may still be following us, so we need to move on quickly.”  “We’ve had intel that there’s a bounty out on you two so it’s likely you’ll be followed all the way. You must stop those stones falling into the wrong hands, whatever it takes. Talk to Martin now, he has your next destination.” Jake was patched through to Martin Klein in the basement of ARKANE. He walked back into

shop, angry shouting.  The barber must have pointed out the back as the noise grew closer. There were two men at least. They must have split up, but he was still outnumbered.  Jake tensed, ready to strike. At least he had surprise in his favor.  One man came out, then a second, both striding away from him into the alley behind the shop. They clearly didn’t expect him to be waiting for them.  He grabbed the second man from behind and sliced across his throat with the razor. The man didn’t even

right hand side was a slight opening: she reached inside and found a key. Pulling it out, she showed the leader. “The door wasn’t locked. Why the key?” he said. “The Keepers surely designed some fail safe. Perhaps this activates it somehow.” “Great theory, crazy woman, but I’m not going in there. You go in, get the stone and I’ll be waiting here. If you don’t come out, then, hey, it’s all over anyway.” Morgan swallowed.  She didn’t like wasps, but then who did? It was a rational human fear.

She thought of what these two meant to her and how she would have given her life to save them.  It was time to go home. But first, she wanted to find Jake.  Standing, she looked at herself in the mirror on the rough wall. Her eyes were bloodshot, skin bruised from the beating and still sooty from the ash. Her arm was in a new sling but her t-shirt was dirty and she smelled of smoke.  She smiled.  This wasn’t Morgan the academic anymore and she was glad of it. Despite Jake’s betrayal, he had
